It seems like people in Sri Lanka are still getting used to having so many tourists coming into the country, what could cause most of them to stare at foreigners many times, even though it’s basically out of curiosity. It’s not rare that one can see locals waving, questioning about where one is from, chatting for a little bit or even asking for a selfie!
What is a tuktuk?
The tuktuk, one of the most common means of transportation in Sri Lanka, is a three-wheeler motorized vehicle that can fit up to four people: the driver and three passengers on the backseat. It looks like a combination of a car and a motorcycle and is used mainly as taxi. It can be also called “three-wheeler”, “auto”, or “Rickshaw”.
What is the traditional food of Sri Lanka?
Even though Sri Lankan food can be like some South Indian dishes, the cuisine in the country is still original and unique. The most common dish is the traditional “rice and curry”. Spicy, fish and coconut are some important influencers on the Sri Lankan traditional food.
What is curry?
There are many ways of cooking a curry, but it is basically a blend of different kinds of vegetables and/or meat soaked in some spicy sauce. The most common curries are based on potatoes, cauliflower, green beans, among other vegetables; or can also be based on fish or chicken. It is usually eaten with rice or some sort of bread.
What are some costumes in Sri Lanka?
Like some costumes in India, Sri Lankan people have the great habit of drinking a lot of tea and using it as an excuse for getting together with families and friends, treating the guests very well and giving a great importance to the closest ones. Also, people tend to dress conservatively, especially women, and show a great deal of respect when entering sacred sites like temples (taking one’s shoes off, for example, is basic).

Most people in Sri Lanka tend to be very friendly regarding foreigners, always keen to help them with information or even offering a cup of tea. The main challenge for interactions between foreigners and locals is that many of the last don’t speak English fluently, what can make communication a bit hard.
