State Minister Sanath Nishantha passes away in tragic accident January 25, 2024

In a shocking incident on January 25, 2024, State Minister Sanath Nishantha (48) met an untimely demise along with his Personal Security Officer (PSO) in a fatal accident on the Katunayake Highway.

The unfortunate collision occurred as the state minister’s vehicle collided with a container truck and subsequently crashed into the safety fence while en route from Katunayake to Colombo. The impact of the accident claimed the lives of both the minister and his PSO, leaving the driver seriously injured and requiring immediate medical attention at Ragama hospital.

State Minister Sanath Nishantha held a prominent position, overseeing the Coconut, Fishtail Palm, Palmyrah, and Rubber Cultivation Promotion, as well as Related Industrial Product Manufacturing and Export Diversification Ministry. Additionally, he served as a Member of Parliament representing the Puttalam District.

A close associate of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the late minister was recognized for his outspoken and often controversial stance on various issues. Notably, he was entangled in legal battles, including a case involving the alleged assault of a wildlife officer.

The funeral service to bid farewell to State Minister Sanath Nishantha is scheduled for January 27, 2024, at his residence in Chilaw. The tragic incident has left a void in the political landscape and marks a somber moment for the nation as it mourns the loss of a seasoned politician and public figure.
